Drain Cleaning Options That Won't Damage Your Plumbing

Posted on

Keeping your drains clean is one of the best ways of ensuring you don't have to deal with plumbing emergencies in the future. With a clean drain, there is less possibility of a blockage. However, certain drain cleaners will do more than just clean your drain.

Many drain cleaners generate heat, and this can weaken PVC pipes if this what is found in your house. When your drains are made from metal pipes, damage is more likely, especially in older drains. Drain cleaners may contain caustic, acidic or oxidizing substances and these can damage metals. However, there are other cleaning options you can use that won't harm your pipes.

Enzymatic Drain Cleaners

These types of drain cleaners do less harm to your plumbing and the environment. They contain enzymes or bacteria that feed on the organic waste matter including food particles and hair. As they digest these waste products, they also reproduce and therefore, spread even farther within the system.

These products don't work at the same speed as regular drain cleaners, but this is a small price to pay to preserve your plumbing and do less damage to the environment.

Home Remedies

If you're a big fan of doing things yourself, there are home remedies for clogged drains that you can also try out including:

  • Pouring half a cup of baking soda in the drain followed by an equal amount of vinegar before following up with hot tap water after 15 minutes.

  • Mixing salt, baking soda, and vinegar and pouring the mixture into the drain. You should then pour hot water after an hour

  • Mixing half cups each of baking soda and salt and sprinkling the mixture in the drain before flashing with hot water.

Drain Snake

While the other solutions work chemically, a drain snake uses a more physical approach to the problem. A drain snake is a wire cable that can be extended into the drain and used to fish out the substances that are clogging the drain. Drain snakes are quite simple, but they've proven to be quite effective when clearing drains. An extended wire hanger is often effective when used for this purpose.
