2 Things to Do About Your Electrical System After a Flood

Posted on

Having water is good. Having electricity is good. Having the two of them mixed together is not so good. If your house has flooded because of weather, you are going to have problems with your electrical systems. There are things that you need to do to make sure that you are safe after the flooding and that your electrical systems are going to be OK.

Pull the Meter

Before anything can happen, you will want to have someone from the fire department, local power company, or an electrician come out and take out your power meter. The reason that it needs to be the meter instead of just turning off the master switch for the circuit breaker is that the meter is necessary to make the connection from the power lines to your house. That is the only way to make sure that absolutely no power is getting to your house because it's totally off the grid. This is not something that you should handle on your own. If it is very likely that your house will flood, it would be a good idea to have the meter pulled beforehand to minimize damage.

Be Prepared for a lot of Repairs

You should also brace yourself for a lot of repairs and replacements. How many belongings you will need to replace or repair depends on the extent of the flooding in your home. A good rule of thumb is that anything that was under the level of water will need to be replaced, rewired, or repaired. Depending on what kind of water was flooding your house, you may be able to just dry things out for them to work. However, in most cases, it's more likely you are going to have to write off anything that has been submerged in water, including appliances, home electronics, and your electrical system. It's better to be safe than sorry, and if the inspecting electrician has any kind of doubt about anything, it's a good idea to listen to their advice and replace things. You can also contact a water damage restoration company for expert advice on salvaging belongings after a flood.

Water and electricity are both really good things on their own. Knowing some things to do after you have had some flooding will help to keep you safe and also help to make sure that your house's electrical system may come through the flood better.
